missing the old layer brush

wow layer brush really is sorta messed up what happened to the nice flow it once gave

I too am a bit flumoxed by the new “layer” brush. It seems to have an entirely different character. The layer brush was my favourite brush in ZB of old, producing smooth , flat strokes, with only the outer edges affected by the alpha sillouette. It was very helpful for etching lines and edges in the poly surface.

It now seems to suffer from staggered stroke spacing (making for uneven, broken strokes), even though there doesnt seem to be any place to adjust stroke spacing in poly edit mode( the option is greyed out). Also, the old brush seemed to have an absolute depth based on the z intensity. It now seems to have a z-depth aspect influenced by the brush alpha to it, so the strokes arent flat. Thats would be fine, except all the other brushes have a zdepth based on the brush alpha, so it would be nice if the layer brush was still flat for contrast.

Was the layer brush changed…or is this simply ar result of the way the meshes respond with the higher polycount, that I never noticed before, because I was rarely able to work at that level? Are there any tips out there for restoring the layer brush functionality of old? As it is, it feels either redundant or inferior to the other brushes.

Thanks!

ok managed to tweak a few things to get back the layer brush here are the results.

o ya turn mouse average all the way up under the stroke menu

heres the brush saved out stick it in your brush directory.
its in startup/macros directory

I had good results with the “flatten” brush with slightly raised or lowered flatten slider. Its actually much closer to the layer brush of old without the broken stroke.

The trick with the Layer brush is to save a morph target first.

try using the lazy mouse function in the brush menu. that should smooth out your oddities on your brush, especially if you’re sculpting high res geometry.
