Mirroring on hidden geometry

I have a symmetrically sculpted tool of a human character. I’m trying to sculpt
some detail on the character’s inside right leg, and mirrored to the inside left leg.
Since the left leg is orthographically in the way, I can hide it, go into symmetry mode, then
sculpt the detail on the right leg, but when I unhide the left leg, I discover that those details have
not mirrored to that leg. Is there a way to sculpt on geometry and have it
mirror on a hidden piece of geometry?

I should mention that I know about Smart Resym, but just want to know if there is a standard protocol for
mirroring on hidden geometry.

Nope. Smart resym is the standard workflow.
