Mirror x and weld on masked area?

I don’t know how to mask an area and use only mirror and weld on it, I’m sure there is some way. I’ve tried to mask and hide the areas I don’t want to be symmetrical, I’ve tried to make a polygroup of it but that is just like masking isn’t it. Is there some way to do it without having to separate the head from the body, make it symmetrical, dynamesh it. Z remesh and then project back detail.

Follow up question, one thing that might make the whole process work better would be to use close holes to weld the head back together without messing up the rest of the model. However when I did that it closed the hole in the neck and the head but didn’t connect them together. Unless they were different polygroups which I guess it’s possible they could have been, I never checked. Is there some way to have close holes actually close the holes between two meshes that have been seperate and not just close the holes of the…you get what I mean.

To use close holes on two cylinders instead of putting a lid on the cylinder.

For people who stumble upon this thread in the future, just hide any part of the model you don’t want to be symmetrical, go to deformation and hit smart symmetry. You might want to mask the area on the side of whatever axis that you’re working on, the area that you would like to keep.
