Mirror Symetry help and Pivot changing

Ok 2 questions:

  1. How do I miror(copy) something from one side to the other. I modeled one side of the model, but now I want the other side to look the same, how do I do that? I tried to use smart symetry, but it doesn’t copy exactly. It seems to average both sides out and make it look the same or something, instead of copying. I tried masking out the right side so that it wouldn’t change when I use smart symetry. That stopped that side from changing, but the other side doesn’t look like the one I wanted to copy.

The reason I modeled one side and not use “x” to model both side is because i wanted to change the pivot point.

  1. Is there a way to change a pivot point aside from hiding other areas then clicking “F”?

And one more question.

Is there a tutorial on how to do finger nails?

Smart ReSym will average all unmasked points. If any points are masked, then it moves the corresponding unmasked point to match the masked one. So simply mask the good half of your model before using Smart ReSym.

For fingernails, try doing a search here at ZBC. I got 4 pages of posts when I used that search term, so you should be able to find something helpful.

As for the pivot point, that’s the only easy way to temporarily move the point. There are other options, though. Turning on Transform>Local will dynamically adjust the pivot point to be the last edited point. This is really handy if you’re working on a model’s hands or other extremity, because it prevents the mesh from flying off the screen any time you rotate it slightly. It does not affect symmetry or anything else.

Another option is to use Tool>Deformation>Offset. Or you can move the cross hair in the Tool>Preview. These are both more permanent than setting the pivot point, as they actually change the origin of the model. That means it may not be easy to get back where you started if you need to.
