mirror problems

Hi

I have been trying to mirror something, but there appears to be a bug.

I have a sub tool, which I am attempting to mirror via the mirror function in subtool master. I wish to mirror through the x axis and append as a separate sub tool.

unfortunately, instead of giving me a mirror it duplicates one part of the tool, reduces its poly count and leaves it where it was rather than mirroring. see image of sub tool “A” and mirror result below.

any idea whats wrong?

Maybe you have a mask active. Something else you can try, instead of using Subtool Master, is Duplicate the subtool in the Subtool palette then go to Deformation and click ‘Mirror’.

I have no masks on this tool.

I will try your option and see if it works.

Thanks

sorted thanks.

This means I shall use this method instead of the subtool master, which seems to have a bug, if the function works this way, perhaps the duplication of the process in subtool master is redundant.

Another option in Z4R2: You can draw out an action line (a vertical one in this case), then while holding down the CTRL key, click and drag the middle circle of the action line. This will duplicate whatever is selected/unmasked. You can then hold down the SHIFT key while moving the duplicated part to constrain its movement along the direction of the action line.

I could indeed… its just that this part was symetrical and I was hoping not to have to place things unnecessarily. I should have been able to mirror and find the parts in the perfect place. Its only on the subtool master pull down I had the trouble, using the method described above worked ok too, albeit via an extra step.

For what it’s worth, in your original example, if you duplicated those buckles in your original tool via the new transpose dupe function, it’s possible your original tool was masked, even though the masking isn’t visible, which does cause unexpected behavior when using STM mirror. Transpose dupe produces invisible masks which it’s easy to forget about , and easy to accidentally reinstate after clearing them if you ctrl z for any reason.

yeah i did consider that, as its caused me problems before, but I intentionally clear things after duplication now.

I think Ive found the bug though. this happened again to me yesterday and it was the second duplication of the same object again. its like my machine dosent like mirroring objects it had already mirrored or duplicated once. I have been careful to mask all and clear after duplicating anything, specifically to avoid the invisible masks, but still get the same odd results.
