I am working on a head. I created an ear but don’t want to model another ear for the other side. Is there a way to mirror the existing ear and append it to the model?
In short … Tool/Deformation/MirrorX … or even better Subtool Master/Mirror
and voilá you have another ear ) Just one thing to keep in mind, once you merge your layers to one subtool, you will loose the subdiv. information, so you will probably end up with a lot of subtools
Thank you for the reply. I can’t seem to find “subtool master” under subtools, tool or anywhere else. Where might I find it?
Also, the ear I have is connected to the model. How do I select it only and mirror it?
You need to look in the Zplugin palette.
But in your case Id mask the side with the ear and use the Smart ReSym function (which youll find in the Deformation palette).
I just looked in the plugin palette and find nothing that seems appropriate.
Is there something I’m overlooking?
Which version of Zbrush are you running? In 3.1 you needed to download and install the Plugins first , in 3.5R3 theyre built-in. But as I said in my previous post, I think Smart ReSym is what youre looking for in this case.
I’m using 3.1. I tried using smart resym and it got to about 90% and then stopped and said it had done 90% but nothing happened after that. I’ve also tried doing only the part, unconnected to the body, but nothing at all happened. My mesh has about 4 million polys. Could this be a reason?
Here`s a step-by-step explanation

Im wondering why Zbrush says only 90%? I always had 99% or full symmetry found. 90%, that sounds like you didnt create your mesh originally with symmetry active.
As far as I know Smart Resym works only when you created your mesh originally with symmetry active.
And I think you shouldnt hide parts of your mesh. Sorry, thats all I can tell you.
Hi roberte,
and moin auch moni
regarding the resym issue … that actually happens to me most of the time. What i do is to got to subdiv 1 or 2 apply resym after that go to the highest subdiv and do it once again. Dunno if i am supposed to do it like that but it does work perfectly.
Also sometimes a loose a little bit of control of my sculpting because i get sooooo excited
so i export an obj to Lightwave fix the symmetry issues import back to ZB and there you go … total symmetry
Hope that makes sense
Dirk
I didn’t create my mesh with symmetry active. I have yet to use the symmetry function, Just beginning with zbrush.
Thanks for the input.
