Minoboar fan art

Hi guys, Here is a model I finally finished rendering. I saw this creature in Weta’s Narnia book and thought it would be interesting to make.

The Base model was done in XSI, and it was sculpted in zbrush for details. Textures were mostly done in Zbrush as well. After that the model was brought back into XSI for rigging and fur setup. Finally it was rendered into passes and composited in Nuke. Hope you like it.

Splendid work!

reallyy a good model man  i think fur is not exelent, but i like texturing and render, good work

thanks guys. Yea i myself have to admit that fur isn’t catching so does the axe’s blade. I need to do more practice with them. Part of the goal of the project is to learn xsi and I had many problems using xsi’s hair such as I wasn’t able to render the shadow only pass for fur. I came from Maya side but would like to get into xsi a bit since I liked its modeling tools.

please could you upload the “some raw passes and progress passes” image again but with writing to say what each one is, that would be most helpful

Really nice “warpig” man! No real crits. The only thing I see is that it doesn’t appear the fur has any shadows casting on the skin, only place it looks a little off to me is the right bicep area… some of the hair looks a little floaty…
only noticed it because one of my pieces has the same ish…

awesome model, awesome render!

great image! maybe the result seems quite darker, your character need a strong back light for illuminate the outline of the fur.
how many passes we have here anyway!, could you tell us how do you obtained those passes like Sparky3d asks? thank you

Nice sculpting, I like the forms and anatomy. I think the texturing needs some extra detail, maybe some noise to break it up in some areas, it looks too flat in some areas. Great work though!

hope this helps you

yea man. I agree with you. I still don’t know how to extrace a seperate shadow pass for the fur in XSI. they definitely look quite floaty without the shaodws.

I produced many passes some of them are not used here. I used this project to learn xsi and nuke so I pretty much produce all preset passes and some custom passes based on all kinds of tutorials I found online.

yea, i have to agree with this as well. the initial plan was that the fur would play an important role so the body texture might not need that detailed. But since the fur didnt work as intended, the body definitely is missing some skin details. Maybe i should consider a new texture based on photo sources.

after reading all, i decided to give a shot getting rid of most of the body hair and here is the result. body texture is still missing a bit details. but i think it is better than the one with broken fur.

great! i love this! :+1:

That’s a Top Row render, no doubt. Hail to the warpig.

thanks guys. Ill take a look at the color map and do a re-render sometime this week.

So i spent couple hours redid the color map and spec map of the pig body. Here is the result from the new spec map and color map. now i can see his neck is lacking a bit details, really wish i did some sculpt in this pose but he was just posed that way after rigging was done in xsi.

ha! hes awesome.

i wish he had a curly tail though =D

from the zbrush screenshot, you can see his tail is not straight. :stuck_out_tongue:

Brilliant

Top Row bound, though IMHO he gets a little lost in the black background…

Thanks guys.

Yea the more i work on it the more i think i need a better background. I was thinking he was sitting in the dark. But I think you are right. I haven’t come up with any idea about the background yet. But definitely need to think about that. Thanks.

Hi buddy, I liked the change on the boar skin and axe blade. What did you do?

Hi Devans_87,

I studied your paint over in photoshop and now I can see some of your changes especially on the axeblade. I still like the leather to be a bit desaturated and not so hot looking. But I really liked what you done on the other parts. I am not very good at painting but here is the result what I tried after saw your changes. let me know what you think. thanks.
