What is ‘System Idle Process’ in ‘Image Name’ column under ‘Processes’ tab and why does it spike CPU usage?

It’s a process that simply keeps the thread schedule moving, and can implement some power saving features. It only operates when the processor is not being used by programs and it takes no resources from anything you might be doing. Although it might appear to be using a lot of the processor, it isn’t and will exit as soon as necessary.
