Michael Jackson | Smooth Criminal (1988) | 3D Character Portrait

After months of work, I’m excited to share my latest personal project — Michael Jackson | Smooth Criminal (1988) | 3D Character Portrait.
This project was a complete end-to-end character creation where I worked on modeling, texturing, look development, grooming, and rigging. My main goal was to recreate Michael Jackson’s iconic 1988 Smooth Criminal era, a look that has always stood out to me for its elegance, confidence, and timeless style.
Creating the likeness of Michael Jackson was one of the most challenging parts of this project. He is one of the most recognizable people in history, with billions of people around the world knowing his name and music. Every facial feature, expression, and proportion had to be carefully studied to capture his unique appearance.
One of the biggest challenges was the skin texturing. During his lifetime, Michael Jackson was diagnosed with vitiligo, a condition in which the immune system attacks pigment-producing cells, causing patches of skin to lose their color. Because he often wore makeup to create an even skin tone, finding accurate references was difficult. I spent a lot of time studying photographs from different lighting conditions to recreate a believable skin texture while staying true to his appearance.
This project includes seven final presentations:
Portrait Render – Focused on capturing Michael’s calm, confident, and composed personality.
Turntable Animation – Showcasing the complete character with grooming, look development, and overall presentation.
Concept Movie Poster – My favorite piece of the project. I imagined what a Smooth Criminal movie poster might have looked like if it had been released in 1988.
180° Costume Turnaround – Highlighting the costume design from multiple angles.
Light Stage Presentation – Demonstrating how the model reacts under rotating lighting to evaluate sculpting, forms, and surface quality.
Texture Breakdown – Featuring the Albedo, Roughness, Specular, and other texture maps used in the final asset.
ZBrush Color Shader Render – Showcasing the sculpt and high-frequency details without final shading.
Some amazing facts about Michael Jackson:
Smooth Criminal was released in 1988 as part of the legendary Bad album.
• His signature anti-gravity lean from the Smooth Criminal performance was so innovative that a special shoe mechanism was patented to help achieve the illusion.
• Michael Jackson remains one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with hundreds of millions of records sold worldwide.
• His influence continues to inspire artists, musicians, dancers, and creators across generations.
This project pushed me technically and artistically. It taught me a lot about facial likeness, realistic skin creation, grooming, and presentation. While no likeness is ever truly perfect, I gave this project everything I had and learned something new at every stage of the process.
A special thanks to @sefkiibrahim. His tutorials have always helped me push my limits and consistently achieve better results.
I’d also like to thank @CaveAcademy for their excellent light rigs and HDRI lighting setup, which helped me maintain that fine balance between realism and CG throughout the project.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it.
Feedback and constructive criticism are always welcome.
