Messing Up with Materials and Subtools

I love Zbrush and I’m having a great time for the most part but I’m losing it with Subtools and Materials. This just doesn’t make sense and at times feels illogical. When I change materials for a Subtool sometimes it changes other Subtools Materials and sometimes not. Sometimes I figure things out or think I do and it happens again. I know Zbrush is unique and other zBrush concepts are clicking but I really need help on this Subtools/Materials issue as I’m at my wit’s end.:frowning: I’ve wasted endless hours over the past month trying to get this but I’m just not getting it. Can anybody help me in seeing this right and explain the Subtools/Material rules? I hope I’ve explained myself enough sometimes it’s hard to explain what’s wrong when you’re such a noobie.

thanks for your time.

Marcus thanks so much!!!

I have another quick question. Why do I lose some of my materials (and not others) when I press merge down in the Subtool palette? I want to merge all my subtools into one tools and retain all the materials. Confused again.

thanks for your time.

Ok nevermind, I figured it out. I had some Layers still Recording and they were messing up my Materials when I tried to Merge Down. I stopped recording them and everything worked.

Glad you got it sorted.
