mesh extraction problem

im trying to make feathers using mesh extraction. im including the little splits that feathers have where the fibers dont line up. when i do a mesh extraction with this, it doesnt correctly include those splits and instead approximates them incorrectly. is there a way to fix this?

Thats some pretty fine detail to ask from an extraction. It’s more of a “ballpark” solution. But if you increase the resolution on the object you are extracting from, and mask out the feather as large as possible, it will improve the results.

You’d have better luck using shadowbox, which will give you more control, or even the “make 3d” option from a black and white alpha in the alpha palette.

You could also draw out the geometry deliberately by retopoing a shape on top of the object in the retopo mode and giving it a bit of thickness.

Any of these methods are only going to get you in the general vicinity of what you want. Those really fine indentations are things youre going to have to sculpt in.
