mesh extraction from mask

sorry to keep asking all of these begging questions but I looked online and found lots of tutorials. the only problem is that I woudl like to draw a mask on an object and the use mesh extraction. as of right now the only thing I can use mesh extraction on is the part that is not hidden. So my simple question is there a way to use the mesh extraction on an area that I masked.

I’m trying to break an object up into it’s separate armored pieces.

thanks if anyone can help me or point me in the right direction.

Masking an item is the way you go about extracting. I’m not sure where you are going with the “hidden part”. Masking itself isn’t “hidiing” geometry. You hide geometery by using the “ctl shift alt” selection tools or by turning off visibility in the subtool palette, but that won’t interfere with anything visible that you have masked for extraction.

Just draw your mask on whatever visible geometry you want to extract from and go to the subtools subpalette of the tools palette and set your smoothing and thickness preferences and “extract”.

Note that a hidden mask appears on the extracted geometry. If you want to manipulate it further, press “clear mask” in the masking subpalette and you are good to go.

i got it workign i was doing it backwards.
