I’ve noticed that when I use Merge Down to merge subtools, sometimes it retains my subdivision levels and other times it doesn’t. At first I thought it had to do with the two subtools having the same number of subdivision levels, but sometimes even if they do it clears my subdivision history.

So what are the hard and fast rules for maintaining subdivision history when you’re merging subtools?

The only theory I’ve come up with is that if you have subtools which are comprised of multiple objects, it confuses the merge. It may also happen if any of the subtools being merged contains tris. Still not 100% sure on this.
