Memory settings guidelines?

I know this has been asked a lot but,

Is there some kind of rule of setting your compact memory setting?
Like you should always set it to 1/4 of your available ram or something like that.

If you have a 64-bit system: It should be set to 1,000 below your available RAM, up to its maximum value of 4096.

If you have a 32-bit system: It should be set to 1,000 below your available RAM, but no higher than 2048.
