Memory and multi-million poly question.

Hi,

I’m interested to know memory settings I should be using for my PC.

I’ve got an AMD 3200XP and 1.28 gig ram. What level can I safely set the max poly setting slider?

At the moment I’m modelling a 2.5 million poly mesh but would really like to take it up a subdiv level to add high detail bumps.

Also are AMD 3200XP processors hyper threading? I ran the HT test in the memory menu and it yielded a 0.7% speed increase…which seems a strange result. I’m using this PC specifically for Zbrush/3d. Any other system tweaks anybody can suggest to gain extra ZB2 speed are most welcome.

Thanks!

xp3200 is not a HT processor, I think only intel has this now. Leave it disablesd. As the advice goes never more than double your polymax setting. Most likely you will not be able to divide again. Set your mem to something very close to your system ram, do not exceed though. I don’t think it will hurt to try but you will probably get an error. In my experience when you get an out of memory error ZB will still do the divide eventually, but be warned it will probably not load it then later as a brush.

Check in the community forum for a very good thread on ram and Zbrush.

Good luck,
James

ZBrush automatically sets the MaxPolyPerMesh based on your system’s RAM. You can safely take it up to double that value, but should not go higher.

Is there a way to have it reevaluate this value??? MY system has changed since first launch of Zbrush 2, I have doubled the ram. Should I just guess?

Is this impossible?? Seems to run well, but would be nice to know what the exact setting should be.

Thanks,
James

All you need to do is rename your UICustom.cfg file to UICustom.bak. When you launch ZBrush, the MaxPolyPerMesh setting will be where it’s recommended for the new RAM that you have. You can then rename your file back to .cfg so that you can modify the value (if appropriate) in your regular interface configuration.

Thanks will do that.
