Memory and Maximum Polys

Can I just ask someone who knows for an answer to this question.

I have a machine that has 8 Gig of memory (64 bit OS) running. If I increase this memory to 12 Gig, will my Zbrush be able to handle more polys before it has a problem? I have a huge, very detailed mesh that is at 34 Million polys, and I still have some more to do before I can pose it and use decimation master on it.

Thanks in advance.

Hey Gordon,

no it won’t. ZBrush still can`t handle more than 4GB even on a 64 bit OS.

Damn  . I shouldn’t have bought 8gigs  .

Yes you should have  the rest of the memory can be used by windows and other apps, so that ZB can at least use the full 4 GB.

Stuff it. Just looked at the processes page in Task Manager, and with my tool loaded with all the subtools at their max, all 35 Million polys, Zbrush is only using 1.6 Gig. No need for more memory.

Thats good to know  .

I’m under the impression ZBrush is also very processor dependant, so if you wanted to handle larger meshes, increasing your processor horsepower will help you handle higher poly counts on your models.

Hey there,

i don’t think that a faster processor will up your max Polycount, but it will definitely speed up your entire workflow a lot.

got an i7 940 anyway. In no hurry to upgrade that.
