Mega Man

Hey Everyone,

I’m teaching a 9 week online course at CGTalk.com entitled, Modern Game Character Creation. Anyhow, the assignment for the class is to have the students re-envision a retro video game character using today’s tools and techniques.

While making the videos and course material, I’m working on my own re-envisioned retro character to go along…

Here’s a shot at a stage right before creating the ‘in game’ geo for map bakes…

i love it, everything about it is cool. i need to start takin classes but with the credit crunch and all lol

Everything looks very crisp and well thought out. I love it. I feel like the face could have done with a little more detail or character. But that could potentially still come through in the texturing stage.

Fantastic work.

That looking sweet and awesome Idea :D:+1:

Looking sweet so far… U gonna do the full body?

Very cool

Thanks all!

Greg, that’s a good point… I may hop back in after the lowpoly is made (I’ll have fresh eyes)

That above render was driving me nuts all day… here’s a better one:

nice work and concept:+1:

I really like the fact that the helmet stays classic and adds depth and a realistic machined look at the same time. Its a very good render and I love the idea of re imagining a retro character. I also think its important to stay as true to the original concept of the character and their persona as possible, and that was shown beautifully with the helmet. With that being said I couldn’t help but notice that he is obviously a black guy (either that or you need to totally rethink the face of your image ) And I was just curious as to what inspired the change.

Looking very COOL! :+1:

Very interesting concept… I really like his eyes!

Cool character! Very clean modeling – the helmet looks fantastic.
Great work on the eyes!

very nice interputation. like the others also says. mesh looks very nice and clean. good going.

cool work … cant wait to see the rest of it

Are you going to texture him Jon?

This is really amazing work. I find the technical stuff much harder than the organic, and as a beginner, have no idea how to get that rich technical detail…

If I can offer a tiny piece of advise… His head looks a little too big for the helmet, which makes the helmet look like part of his skull, rather than it being warn on his head. Look at some pics of the helmets in star wars to get what I’m talking about. Other than that, this is super cool, and I love the glowing effects.

Hey, thanks everyone!

Part of the assignment for the class I’m teaching is to put your own twist on the retro video game char you’re re-envisioning. As you can see, one of my twists is to make MegaMan of African heritage.

I did this for aesthetic reasons… when it comes to the coloring, the blues of his outfit will play nicely against a darker orange/brown skin… that was my main intention.

I’ll be coloring him in… he’ll get the whole ‘next gen’ treatment. With that said, the low poly model is next, followed by UVs, bakes, etc…etc…

I’ll make sure to post the milestones in here.

Thanks again everyone!

–edit–

Just saw your response benny… that’s actually the second time I’ve gotten feedback along that vein. My thinking is to make the helmet a bit larger in the final low poly… I see what you’re saying though

ya, making the helmet bigger would do the trick. Sorry if I sounded picky, being a new poster here - I hope my comment didn’t take away from the fact that I think this is a great great piece.

Nope, not picky at all! I appreciate the feedback…

Did you do a tutorial for face painting some time ago? If so, I wanted to thank you for doing that. It gave me some good ideas.
