Mean Machine WIP

I’ve started on another character (god! I need a job). It’s of another 2000ad character. This time it’s Mean Machine. So here is the beginning of this one. It’s kind of a cross between the film (which he was one of the only good things about said film) version and the comic.

He needs subdividing one more time before more detail is going to be added. ![mean_01.jpg|640x480](upload://6PtrBWufeUUYafvQts1HYlTRG4j.jpeg)

Hope you like. I’m in two minds about this one. Could go iether way.

Comments and the likes are welcome. MX

“Mean machine” and my favorite…“ABC Robot”! Nice work.

Pride, Yeah… both of those characters were very cool. Just a shame about the rest of the film.

OK… the last render was a bit… pants. So here’s a slightly tweaked version. Have gone back a step and taken some detail out and added other detail in.

If anyone has any feedback, then go for it. This is a constant learning process.

definitely prefer the new render with changes.

if a zb render…make a doc twice the size you wanna do the screen grab at then hit aahalf button before rendering…will give a much clearer aa picture and let us enjoy the details better.

keep at it.

Ah the cursed earth is a rough place on youngsters.
Im not really familar with the comic book version but he looks alot like the one in the film. Which is by far the best piece of cinema Ive ever seen (sarcasm).
looks like you have a good start so far Id say I would really work those strectchy flesh areas around the pistons.

is this just a bust or are we gonna see that crazy ass weapon hes got on his arm :qu:

Hey, really nice work…:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:

Aminuts, Good call. I’ll try and remember to render out at a higher resolution from here on. This one is double the size and then reduced to %75 in PS.

Evan Gaugh, Please don’t remind me how bad that film was. :P At the time it came out I thought I was lucky as I had some early screen tickets due to working on the computer game… but that changed when I saw the film…… the horror!

It’s only going to be a bust. I’m not good with machinery and stuff. :expressionless:

It was amusing though to hear from friends (who were extras on the film) that Stallone stood on a box in photos so he wouldn’t be dwarfed by all the goth extras. :) Buckie, Cheers. :)

Another small update. Just before I take it up to 4 million polygons.

I’ve started to rely less on photo reference of Mean from the film and more of Clint Eastwood. I naturally simplify stuff as I go along so I thought it would be best to start of with a real person as reference than a film prop… even though I think they probably use Eastwood as reference for the character anyway.

Feedback is welcome as always.

Oh yeah…I have a question or two:

  • Is it best to add details like wrinkles and the likes before adding the more general skin detail?

  • How many alphas do you think you need to for skin textures for a human head?
Thanks

MX

MX, this looks great!

Like the er - metal thing in his neck - like a piston/gasket/pneumatic? thing. V. cool.

I can definitely see a Clint Eastwood chin there.

I was 14 when I saw the film and loved it, but it would have been better if Goldsmith had done the score. He did the trailer music… and that was out-of-this-world.

Am new to this software, and these boards, so out of curiosity, how many hours effort has this taken so far?

Nice one. Can’t wait to see more. :+1:

IBHH, man, you have a better memory than me… although that’s not saying much. I can’t remember seeing a trailer for the film. I remember the photos in the newspapers about it and thinking “wow, that looks cool”. Surprisingly enough, they are playing it on TV this Sunday.

Anyway, welcome to the world of tomorrooooowwwww… *cough* sorry, I mean, welcome to the world of zbrush. It’s hard to work out how long I’ve worked on this so far. Being unemployed, time has become an abstract concept and doesn’t feel related to anyone else’s. Urm… I may have spent 2 or 3 evenings/nights working in Zbrush on this. Then again, there are some people who can knock up amazing images in minutes and others take months. MX

MX, ZBrush has definitely caught my attention!

IBHH, good music. Shame they ditched it. Probably to keep in like with the general blandness of the rest of the film.

I’ve been having trouble with this part of modelling. I just can’t get the skin detailing to work. I studied the Francois Rimasson Quicktime video but can’t seem to get the same results and the video is too low rez to check what the exact settings are.

Anyway, here’s a test. If you have any pointers, tips or crits… that would be great. Thanks MX

Think I’m going to give this character a miss for a bit. I’ve spent so much time trying to get the skin to work and not having much luck that I need a break. It’s just coming to much of a chore. I think my original Maya model lacked a certain style. It just looks bland.

Maybe I should relax a bit and do a Cthulu type thing that I started some time ago: [http://www.deviantart.com/view/14062851/](http://www.deviantart.com/view/14062851/)

This is awesome work. I like how you’ve combined the film and comic versions. I’m fairly new to Zbrush, and Mean Machine has been on my list of characters to try my hand at once I’m more experienced with the program.

Your work is really inspiring stuff
