Maya/PolypaintPipelineQuestion

My understanding of the pipeline is:

  1. Make base quad model
  2. Go crazy sculpting in ZBrush
  3. Export a hi res model and retopologize or do it in ZBrush
  4. Layout UVS on retopologized model

Here’s where I get stuck.

I want to use polypaint on the hi res model so the texture stays large but now the UVs are different between the retopologized model and the HiRes model.

How do I get the UVs from the retop model back up the pipeline to the hi res model.

Thanks - bowlja

Among the steps you posted, where’s the step in wich you do your polypainting? For what I get you just sculpt like a crazy and after that makes a new mash, with clean topology and clean UVs. After that is the moment to start working on painting, in my opinion.

Right! That’s what I want to do, but I have 2 models.
One hi resolution in ZBrush that has no UVs and 1 low res retopologized model in Maya with good UVs.

I need to get the UVs from the lo res (which has good UVs) to the hi res so I can polypaint on the hir res model (which has no UVs) , then export the texture and assign it to the lo res model and have it work.

Does that make sense???

One question: The level 0 of your hi model and the low model (with good UVS) have the same topology? If so, you just have to go to level 0 of your hi and reimport the OBJ with UVs over it.

But if they are completely diferent, what I believe it’s the case, you have to use your low poly as a retopo mesh, project all details of your high over it, make the step above, and then start your painting. A detailed step by step in how to do this topology issue is given here:

Good luck!

That’s the piece I was missing. Thank you so much. The mesh detail projection will do the trick! By the way, I love your DW3 entry and I’m not just saying that cause you helped me out.

I saw it when you first did it and really liked characters a lot.

Thanks for the help.

You’re welcome, Mike. Thanks for the nice words about my model, I’m glad you liked. See you.
