Maya crease sets in ZBrush - ANSWERED!!! :)

With the new partial functionality of GoZ in 3R, is there any way to get ZBrush to recognize Maya creasing? This would really save me a lot of work. I have tried to import several .ma files, but ZBrush crashes each time I do. However, right before it disappears, I can see that there is a dotted line where the creases were in Maya. Just a tantalizing glimpse, then, poof. Gone. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks.

That would rock! I use this all the time. I usually hit 3, view it smoothed, crease all my edges, then convert the smooth mesh preview to polys, import into ZB and then reconstruct the sub D’s.

This would be a huge time saver!

Hi Nick. You’re telling me! i always forget to undo what I did in Maya, ao I’m left with really dense parts. Maya crease sets in ZBrush is the thing I’ve been most anticipating since I heard about GoZ. It already works for the mac. And THEY are jealous of US. Ha.

Hello Omulu01 and Nick

Bringing creasing from Maya to ZBrush and ZBrush to Maya is possible in 3.5R3. If you apply creasing in Maya export that file out as a .ma and then import that into ZBrush you will have creasing on the edges that you had in Maya.

Please remember that before exporting you have to delete all the history on the Maya file. If you do not then it will not work.

Thanks a million, Paul. My latest tests have worked! WooHoo!

I just got to try this out. What a huge time saver! So cool!

Happy to help. This is part of GoZ.

Thats so cool! I’ve been doing it the hard way all week. Unreal!

Not so fast! Yes, I get my creases, but in every test done by everyone here at my studio, we now get scaling and position problems. No one can seem to bring a .ma subtool into any existing tool and have it be the right size or position. Objs work just fine, but no creasing. Ugh!

BTW, history is deleted and transformations frozen for everything. I can bring things into a new new tool, but we have a huge library of old tools we need to revisit again and again. It is impractical to recreate these.

Ok, so the crease sets work. Now what if I want to remove them from my sculpt? I have only found in ZB that you can increase, but it can be time consuming.

I was hoping that I could remove these in Maya and push back a MA. File to remove them but the crease sets remain.

Am I doing something wrong?

Nick

The uncrease in Maya should update into ZBrush. I will test for you but if you hold down shift and click uncrease all edges will be uncreased. Try that.

Paul

Paul,

I just tried the hold shift UnCrease All and it works great. So now I can crease get my edges and then remove the crease and then sculpt away on my model.

(Hard edges held with all crease sets removed!!! Awesome!)

Very cool work flow. Let me know what you find on the Maya front. I just selected all my edges in my model and then I used the crease edge tool and then middle mouse drag all the way tot the left to get a value of zero. I believe there is a remove all crease sets option as well. I didn’t give that a try yet.

Thanks again for the help Paul. Tell the Zcrew to have a Merry Christmas and one heck of a New Year!

Peace - NickZ,
