Maya 8.5 troubles

I upgrade from Maya 8 to Maya 8.5. My displacements work fine in 8.0 using Mental Ray, but in 8.5 all the settings has changed and it won’t render out my displacements. Mental Ray keeps crashing. The settings for Mental Ray in 8.5 has changed. Does anyone know the setting I need to set to get my displacement to come out in Maya 8.5 Please Help!!!

Do you mean you open 8.0 files in 8.5?

I’m using 8.5 and I don’t have any problem with the displacement. 8.5 uses newer mental ray, and it’s more stable to handle heavier displacements. My only problem is that they moved things around, but for the most part, the settings are still the same.

Perhaps you want to try and redo your displacement settings. They are still the same as in 8.0 though…

Have you tried the Maya forums? I don’t use MR and I know troubles with it come up alot, but this is perhaps not the right forum. :wink:

Well feureau saved the day! :wink:

Thanks feureau vbmenu_register(“postmenu_362640”, true); but I tried redoing my settings in 8.5 the problem keeps happening. I also try doing a complete new project and the problem is still happening. I was wondering if you can do a post of your setting when you render with Mental Ray.

Are you converting your maps to .map file format. That will address most of the crashes.

Best,

Ryan

In the old maya, MR usually crash when loading a rather large displacement map, so converting to “MR Friendly” memory .map would help a lot. Most of the times, dispmap rendering in maya MR crashes due to wrong memory settings one way or another. Look at mr global (it’s been hidden in 8.5, select using:

select mentalrayGlobals;

make sure memory limit does not exceed available memory and adjust bsp according to your scene.

My settings aren’t unique. I used the one from the zpipeline guide, with the old disp exporter on z2. Only different with z3 is not to use 2.2 as alpha strength. And check the normals. Sometimes Z3 exported mesh with the normals flipped. Annoyingly, this aren’t very apparent with maya, I only found out on XSI where it’s more obvious.

Thinks ryankingslien and feureau I always convert my files to .map I use the same setting as the Maya pipeline guild. I checked the memory setting and it keeps reverting back to auto. I have 3G of ram on my system and 3.06 Xeon should I set the bsp to large. I just used the defult setting in 8.0 Thanks guys for responding to the post. I don’t know what to do now.
