Materials bug - urgent

I can’t assign more than one material to a project and have it stick - I can apply a main material, and it will remain through multiple operations, but after that I can only paint or fill with a secondary material, which then changes with each selection I make in the materials palette. For instance, I make a wooden tabletop, and try to paint in gold inlay; it looks fine until I try to make fittings on the table legs from iron. The gold changes to iron.in every subtool. The outlines of the area selected for the secondary material remain the same, or, occasionally, disappear altogether.

My M, RGB or MRGB settings are appropriate to the situation.

Trying to use a third material kills the second one, and sometimes results in a material-less project no matter what I do after. Polypaint works as expected. I’m trying to create a multi-material object for a client and this is killing me.

Does this always happen, or only on the specific tool/project you’re working in?
