Material transplantation help needed

Hello everybody.
I have “zbrushed” a head which I modelled in maya. The head was cut out from the rest of the body (now I know it was a mistake). Now I want to “zbrush” the entire character (including head), but I don’t want to paint my head again. Hot to transplant my painting/sculpting from one object to another, without loss of details.

I’ll try to explain my problem using images. The first image shows my zbrushed head, the second the body on which I want to migrate my zbrush painting/sculpting.
Thanks in advance,
Artur

BTW, how would you organize your workflow, having to sculpt and paint the entire character in zbrush, which was first modelled in external app? Would you import to zbrush object after object and work on them separately (ex. first the corpse, then the pants, the cloak) or would you import everything once and split it somehow in zbrush in separate objects/groups? (yes, I’m not a zbrush expert).

Thanks,
Artur

I personally would just delete the current head from the model and append the detailed one as a subtool. Given the wierd geometry you’ve got going on there, trying to mess with ProjectAll or ZProject is liable to create more headaches than it’s worth. Also, by having the head as a separate subtool you can subdivide it independently of the body and so give it more detail than would otherwise be possible.

As for your second question, the SubTool Master plugin has a feature to import multiple OBJ’s and combine them into a single model as subtools.

Aurick,
thank you very much for the advice. I thought about this solution, but had one problem with it. Namely, will I be able (after I cut out the head in maya) to seamlessly merge in zbrush the sculpted/painted head with the rest of the body, imported from maya? And if so, how to do it? Doesn’t zbrush change edge topology during SDS subdivision?
Again, thanks for help, and have a good day.

Artur,

PS. BTW, what do you think of the monster? What needs improvement (I guess many things, this is the first human like character which I made)?

Aurick,
I beg your pardon but only now I noticed that you wrote “… by having the head as a separate subtool you can subdivide it independently of the body…”. Does it mean that, provided I apply your solution, the head won’t be one with the rest of the body? I realize that having a head as separate subtool and being able to subdivide it independently are great advantages, but what about the seam between head and neck? And how about animating the character. Please excuse my bugging you, but answers to these questions would greatly help me in this project.
Thanks and best of all,
Artur

Aurick,
please do reply, your help was invaluable to me. Anyway, thanks and have a good day.
Cheers,
Artur
