"Material Texture" usage?

At the bottom of a material’s Modifier controls, beneath the color swatches, is a spot for a texture. That texture is called a Material Texture.

I would like to get that texture to show through in my material’s overall diffuse BPR render. Is that possible? Or is it just to be used as some sort of mask for some controls/effects?

What exactly does the Material Texture do? Or what is it capable of? As far as I can tell, the only effect it has is on reflectivity.

I’m playing with SSS, and I would like to have a sub dermal texture map, as opposed to just flat colors for the SSS effect.

Thank you oh so much if you could help me do this. Or provide some other solution for using a texture map for sub dermal coloring/sss effects.
