Material Fill and Subtools - Working?

I have the latest version of zBrush. When I change one subtool’s material using the Subtool Master (or just MRGB or M), one other subtool (the body of the character) always takes on this newly filled material. I hide everything except the tool being filled, but it never fails - the hidden body always gets the new material.

Any ideas what might be the cause for this?

There are no textures on any of these subtools.

Hi,

Unless you actively fill a subtool with a material then by default whenever you switch the selected material (even when working on a separate subtool), the material will change. To make sure the other (non-selected) subtool remains the same you must first fill it (color > fill object). This will assign the selected material to the subtool in question and now it will not change automatically when the other subtool does.

Hope this makes sense

Yes, this makes sense and I did this. Didn’t explain it well enough. But, I’ve done this all before. I’m just wondering if it’s a bug or I’m doing something out of the ordinary.

  1. I hide all but the subtool I want to fill (body of the character).
  2. I fill the subtool with the chosen material.
  3. I select the subtool to bring all of the subtools back.
  4. I select the next subtool and hide all others
  5. I repeat #2 and #3

Now the body is filled with the last material I filled from the other subtool.

Why are you using Subtool Master? That’s OK if you want to fill a lot of subtools with the same color and/or material all at once, but if you are only filling one subtool at a time then select the subtool you want to fill, then select your color and/or material, turn on ‘Mrgb’ button and go to ‘Color’ menu and click ‘FillObject’.

As far as I know, there is no reason that you should have to hide a subtool in order to fill another with a material. I was able to recreate the situation you just described however. I havn’t tested thoroughly but I think a work-around may be to simply go back to the first subtool after completing the process and fill that one again. Worked for me.

This is probably a bug of some kind, or maybe just another one of ZBrush’s quirks.

Perhaps someone else can help?

@zber2 - It happens with or without Subtool Master. I’ve tried multiple workarounds…with hidden, without; with Subtool Master, without; M or MRGB - all with the same result.

@Trist - Thanks for your help. I am hoping others see the same weirdness and it is addressed. Even if this is a procedural issue, it has become too complex to call it a workflow.

Then again, maybe there is something I don’t know. If others are having this same issue, please post it here to put up a smoke signal to the developers. Otherwise, I’ll wait to see if someone has special insight.

I have never had this issue. I can’t even recreate it following your steps above. Are you on a Mac by any chance?

Nope. Windows 7.

I have 7 objects. The problematic one (the main body) is at the top. It doesn’t matter, most likely where it is. But, it happens every time without fail.

If you havn’t already, you should also post this problem in this thread. Pixologic might notice it quicker. Make sure you mention your OS.

Thanks. Done.
