matcaps vs performance?

Here´s a question: Speaking of performance - does it matter how many materails you have in your material palette uploaded? I mean if I had about 100 matcaps it would probably take a little longer (very little) to load the program, but does it affect the performance during work in any way, or is it only when the materials are actually applied to a subtool?

i use in 3.5 lot of alpha and texture without problem.
