MatCap Quick Picks Causes Crashing

Seems everytime I go through to many MatCap Materials, Zbrush 3.5r3 crashes, which wasn’t a problem I had in previous versions of Zbrush. It seems that because of the newly added quick pick section in the MatCap menu Zbrush runs out of memory after viewing a lot of MatCaps and crashes. I’m running a pretty powerful computer, but its happened everywhere I’ve used 3.5r3.

Is there something I’m missing, or a way to disable the quick pick menu? I’m tired of this crashing all the time, I LOVE MatCaps!

How many materials do you have installed in your ZStartup\Materials folder? It should not be more than 25. The purpose of this folder is to hold materials that you will use constantly – not every material that you think you might like to use at some point. Every item in the ZStartup directory loads on launch and eats up RAM.

Any of your many other materials should simply go in the ZMaterials folder. This will allow you to browse them quickly and easily using Light Box’s Materials tab. You can even put Windows shortcuts into your ZMaterials folder so that you can readily browse to other folders on your system.

i’ve had this happen as well and i only have 10 mats in the startup folder, however i’ve noticed that very specific materials cause the crash, like all the bone illustration.zmt’s maybe because they have so many shader channels. This happens if you go through the mats too fast.

I only have 33 in my start up folder. The problem isn’t with loading them, the problem occurs once I have viewed my mesh with multiple MatCaps. Usually only around 15 or 20, then it crashes. I never had the problem with any versions before 3.5r3. I could’ve gone through 100 Matcaps on a mesh, no problem.
