Matcap image to matcap material?

Hi there,

I have some matcap material jpg. images that I’d like to use as materials for sculpting and what not. There is a way of doing it but I have no clue how.

Would really appreciate it if somebody can help me out on this.

Thanks in advance!

  1. Open ‘Texture’ menu and import your image.
  2. You can just use the default Red Wax matcap for setting up your new one, so make sure that is selected.
  3. Open the ‘Material’ menu and click on ‘Modifiers’ submenu to open it.
  4. At the bottom of the ‘Modifiers’ submenu, you will see 4 color slots (all white). Under the ‘Base’ color slot, there will be one texture slot. Click on the texture slot and select the image you imported .
  5. At this point you have your new matcap and can save it.

Note: If you look in the Materials palette you will see that your new material has replaced the Red Wax matcap but this is only temporary. The Red Wax will be back if you Init or restart ZBrush. As for the settings sliders in the ‘Modifiers’ submenu for your new matcap, you can fool around with those if you want. It’s up to you.

Hey zber2, really appreciate the response. It worked like a charm, thank you!
