Masking woes

I’d like to be able to mask an object with a texture, without disturbing the polypainting. Here is the simplest scenario:

  1. import a poly plane .obj (4 verts, previously exported from zbrush with correct uv layout )
  2. subdivide the plane
  3. import a texture for masking
  4. hit mask by intensity
  5. crash

If I drop the texture to polypaint, mask by intensity does not crash, but then I lose any polypainting, which defeats the purpose. I need to be able to re-use masks as I work. Am I missing something obvious?

I found that the crashing was taking place if the image used was 1024 pixels square or larger. Confirmed as a bug.
