Masking Problem

Hello Everyone,

By default, ZB masks through a mesh. So, if I draw a mask on the front side of a character, by default the corresponding area on the rear side also is masked. A comment in this thread (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=92210&highlight=lasso ) indicates that “mirrored masking” allows for masking on only one side, e.g., the front side.

The only mirror option I find is in the Geometry palette (Mirror And Weld). I have no idea what welding is in ZB. Can anyone explain how to mask only one side of the mesh? Thanks.

Let me just follow-up my own post by saying that if I use a dots stroke instead of a lasso, press Ctrl, and draw on my model, the mask will only affect one side of the model, i.e., exactly where I draw it. But I’m still curious as to whether a “mirror option” would allow me to drag a lasso or rectangle to mask only one side.

Did you try backface masking? http://www.pixologic.com/docs/index.php/Backface_Masking

Best,
Jason.

I’ll try it. Thanks for the info.

After re-reading what you are wanting to do it may be easiest to simply hide the backface polygons you don’t want the masking brushes to impact.

Mirrored masking simply refers to the fact that you can now mask with symmetry enabled.

Jason.

Here’s a video for hiding:

and a couple showing masking with symmetry:
