masking front of character, also masks behind character?

I am still pretty new to zbrush, when i try and do a ctrl+lmb drag for a mask, it adds the mask behind my mesh as well? can anyone tell me the work around behind that. i just found out how to paint my mask today.

Also, i can only draw my mask shape when my mouse is off my sculpted character. im in edit mode sculpting it, buti have to be off my character to do taht type of maskign. is there a way i could be zoomed in to the characters face, so no backround is showing, and do a drag mask? sorry if im being unclear, but its hard for me to get the details right casue im so new…thanks in advance.
