Masking Error

Hello-
I was wondering if some one could tell me why when I paint a mask by holding control it paints through my object to both sides? I’m making a belt buckle and want to mask parts of the front of the buckle and ajnd sculpt them, but when I paint the mask on the front it goes through the object to the back. I have symmetry turned on, but it is only x, so left to right, NOt in Z. The object is fairly this but it has 2 sides and is not 1 plane. Is there some sort of backface culling im not aware of?

Your brush is actually a 3D sphere. So it is finding the geo behind it.
you can turn this off by turning on

brush>backFaceMasking
