ZBrush has MANY UV options including painting directly on a model.
What makes MARI a better pipeline candidate than ZBrush?

MARI = working layers.

They are just a different approach to texture work. Mari is bound by UVs (which it auto generates for you).
Zbrush is bound by mesh density.

That is really the only difference, other than mari’s layers work. It also has a realtime 3D viewport for more than just diffuse.
It also costs more than 2x as much. Bodypaint and DeepUV are also great tools for texture work, if you’r looking at painting software you should check them out.
