Many ZBrush FastShader and Dark Shadows when using specific materials

Please notice when I open any ZProject file (zpr) Zbrush changes my materials to darker shadows.

I left below a picture with more information.

If anyone suggest to start new project importing the subtools I should say I cannot export the subtools individually and start a new project because I need the UndoHistory of my old project for a Timelapse.

Those FastShaders are impossible to delete unless importing OBJ, but the moment I open any ZPR. file or even FBX they will always come back and I can’t find them in any folder to delete them manually.

Can any experienced super pro person please help me??

This usually happens when you have some sort of problematic material embedded in a file. ZBrush can’t load it, and it results in that sort of Fast Material spam you see. Sometimes this is a custom material that the user has embedded into the file, but sometimes this can be the result of working back and forth between ZBrush and an external application that may embed some sort of junk material information that ZBrush doesn’t know how to read.


I would recommend restarting ZBrush, and pulling your tools out of your existing scene into a new one using the ā€œLoad Tools from projectā€ function. Since these are coming in as Tool files, all the material slots will be the default IDs.

This will eliminate your Undo History, but that may be unavoidable at this point. You can try to purge the material assignment from every subtool in the file with the Subtool Master >Fill Visible Subtools with the M or MRGB channels active–make sure to clear any masking from ALL subtools first, or the masking might prevent the problem material from being overwritten.


The problem is, if the Undo history itself contains a reference to the problematic material, I’m not entirely certain what effect that will have. I’m only thinking in the abstract here, but it is possible that file will always have that problem as long as the problem material is present in the Undo History.

Theoretical: You can try to inspect all your subtools to see if you can spot any material that doesn’t look right. If you can identify the problem material, you can replace it in the scene by selecting it in the material palette, and using ā€œLoadā€ to load one of the stock materials from the ZBrush program folders. This should replace every instance of the problem material in the scene with the regular material. However, some slight corruption issues are also possible, which may cause odd behavior.



:warning: If I were to single out something that looked suspicious in your screenshot, it would be that bright yellow material applied to a body mesh Tool in your scene that is called ā€œFemale somethingā€. I have seen something like that before that is the result of another program embedding junk material data into an imported mesh. If that material is not something you have done, then I would eliminate every trace of it from your scene.

I am really impressed with your response. So many options now, I really appreciate it.

I will try everything you just mentioned and let you know.

Regarding that yellow mesh I have… that would make so much sense, to be honest… That happened because I decided to test GoZ from Maya and the mesh was coming yellow in ZBrush. I couldn’t figure out how to fix it so I went back to use fbx instead, but I didn’t delete the yellow tool from the top, and I remember it all happened almost at the same time… although not 100% sure.

After your response, I realised once again why I Love Pixologic and Zbrush so much.

The solution to the problem is basically to restart Zbrush or ā€œInit ZBrushā€ from Preferences to keep my Custom UI completely fresh and once the problem is cleared I just need to use the function ā€˜ā€˜Load Tools From Project’’ to import the tools from my broken project. When all tools are loaded I press the ā€˜ā€˜R’’ button to Restore Configuration (this eliminates all those useless extra yellow meshes-tools I have).

It was all pretty simple in the end.

What I did was saving my project Until then So I can edit it later on and add it to the timelapse of the new clean project.
