Making a straight spine armature with Zpheres

Hiya, I’ve searched and searched but can’t seem to sort this one. I’m sure it’s simple!

I draw my first zSphere and then draw another out from its base, drawing down to create the spine. Shift-Ctrl will give me a straight line, but it’s a straight line perpendicular to the attachment point, not perpendicular to the x axis.
I need it to be exactly in line with the vertical axis. Otherwise when I go down and build hips and legs everything everything’s slightly off. Then when you use x-symmetry on your skin you get a different result on each side, as everything’s slightly off axis.
