Making a MatCap

Hi there, I am still in the early stages of learning Zbrush, though I have met with a task on a particular project where I wanted to create a bronze -like matcap (can’t find an appropriate one to download). I came across a tutorial and a thread on here on how to make one, but they all fall short of telling me how to actually convert what is a ‘shading map’ into a material. In the Material pallet there is a MatCap maker, where I have adjusted my shading map, and tried to save it there, but the programme just says ‘error has been encountered while trying to save a ‘ZCurve’. Saving has been aborted’. I assume then I am not doing this right and I either need to do something else or save in a different way. The tutorials seem to assume you’ll know the last bit.

Basically, I loaded an image of a bronze sculpture, chose the flat colour material, the MatCap tool and began dragging points to create the shading map, if this is right so far, what do I do next???

Hope you can help.

See this custom matcap tutorial and see if it answers your questions.

Thanks zber, but that is the one I was using and its isn’t clear to me and others how to save as a material.

Once you have the texture map made like he has in that tutorial, then you would select one of the shader materials in Standard Materials like TriShaders for example and at the very bottom of slot 1 of that shader, you would click on txtr00 icon and select the texture.

I’ll give that a go zber, many thanks

This linkmight help also.

Am I the only one that is getting all kinds of random wacky sites.

I am needing to know how to do this. I am trying to find out how to edit a simple matcap in photoshop and then just bring that BMP back in and save it for later use. It is hard to find a tutorial on this.
