Make subtools into one shell for 3d printing (answered)

Happy Christmas and New Year!

I´m trying to get this model printed 50cms high for a tryout, eventually it needs to be printed life size. I´ve merged all the subtools with weld on then extracted the tool but when I split it I can see that it isn´t one shell. The 3d printing company have told me that I have to create one shell for them and they can´t deal with this. I also tried cloning the tool and using insert mesh. I´m sure I´ll be embarressed at how simple this is but apart from retopoing the model, I can´t find a way. Do I need to use Project All in some way?

Many thanks!
Luke

There’s no easy way to do this. Re-topology would be the cleanest way of doing it. An alternative would be to use the Remesh All function but you’ll need to do quite a bit of cleaning up.

  1. Make sure all the subtools are visible and at the highest subdivision level (or use the combined mesh).
  2. Make sure the symmetry options (small X, Y & Z) are off on the Tool>SubTool>ReMesh All button.
  3. You will probably need to set the Tool>SubTool>Res slider to a higher value. Try 256.
  4. Press ReMesh All.
  5. You’ll now need to project the sculpting detail using Tool>SubTool>ProjectAll. Set the ProjectionShell first using the slider.

You can subdivide the remesh and project again to increase the detail. Store a Morph Target first so you can use the Morph brush to tidy up.

You’ll have a dense mesh doing it this way. Use Decimation Master to reduce the polygon count without losing the detail.

HTH,

Thank you for the help. The remesh isn’t quite up to it, it’d be great if Zbrush could improve this. In the end I clay brushed the figure up to the clothes and then used Project All and this worked okay. The next time I do this I’m not going to have any subtools just make the clothes from the beginning.
Cheers and Happy New year,
Luke
