Mac & Zbrush 3 Thread

More than one year, and still in the same hidden corner of the site. Honestly, if i moust be forzed to use windoze i will run the Mudbox route instead ZB. At least the interface makes more sense to me. Really i can´t to understand this silence.

Well my interest in ZBrush started initially when I found it was for mac. I’ve had no interest in Mudbox yet because it’s a windows app. But if I was forced to use a PC my interest would no longer be just in ZBrush. But seeing how that’s not gonna happen I am only open to what’s available ‘natively’ to mac.

I found my Meats Meier Intro to ZBrush 3 DVDs the other day and remembered that I purchased them a year ago in anticipation of the mac release. I was thinking of buying the 2 new Sybex ZBrush books soon too. But I feel put off by all this waiting. I do believe the release is coming, I’m just afraid of when. I’ve not really done any personal character projects for a long time and deep down I think this is due to the fact that I don’t want to get too involved in something using v2 when v3 is supposedly around the corner

Don’t mind at all mate

I must confess that I bought my Mac Pro Quad with the sole purpose
of using ZBrush in Mac OSX although I also own a powerful PC. Now I have
to use ZB3 in the PC, which I hate.

too bad!

Alan

Indeed, same here, which means I will never use ZBrush either. ZBrush 3 for Mac as far as I’m concerned is vapourware, just as ZBrush 2.5 was. Even ZBrush 2 has become in essence vapourware too because it cannot run on intel Macs. In the meantime, ZB for Windows has already been upgraded to 3.1 and there are threads for feature requests for ZBrush 4 for Windows, which mean they’re developing that. And where is the version, any version, that works on a Mac? Nowhere. And do we know when any version will come? No. ZBrush simply does not exist for the Mac platform and will continue to be so for the unforseeable future.

It was my favourite program on my old Mac, so it’s a shame that it’s not even loaded on my system and hasn’t been for a long time.

I used to visit this forum religiously for years many times a day and ooh and ahh at the top row images, but now I can barely stand to visit once a week, and only to view this specific thread and every time… nothing. Without an ACTUAL APP, everything else on this forum is irrelevant and pointless, features, tips, plugins, everything, especially seeing all the Windows user’s skills with this app moving ahead in tremendous leaps and bounds, while Mac users are left pulling their dicks looking through the store window like some poor street urchins.

And this will be the last time I check. I won’t be visiting this forum again until I receive the email from Pixologic telling me that ZBrush 4 for Mac has been released alongside the Windows version - because I’m no longer expecting ZB3 for Mac to come out before ZB4 for PC, if it even does at all.

“Really i can’t understand this silence.”

Agreed. It’s ominous isn’t it? And annoying.

I said this much much earlier in this thread - but I’ve regretfully come to the conclusion that if you want to do 3d work and have the widest and best options then you’re much better off using a PC.

I love my macbook pro - it’s an ace machine and the design of the case and the friendliness of the system (vs the horrors of vista) makes me much prefer it to my work pcs.

However if you use zbrush, 3dsmax XSI or for that matter direct X then using a mac is a bad call. I’ve been hoping to see a working version of zbrush 3 on mac os (given I bought a copy in september) for, what, 10 months? It’s now one month away from siggraph and honestly I’m hoping for some notable upgrade to the pc version of zbrush - something that deals with its painting capabilities. The mac version? I’ve given up - I’m going to buy a pc for work and (regretfully) ask zbrush if they can simply transfer my license.

i’d agree the lack of info from pixlogic themselves is annoying and leads to wild speculation from their mac osx customers

my personal thoughts of the situation is that pixologic had the rug pulled from under them with the develeopment of the osx version due to apple dropping 1 of the 2 development kits for osx at the end of 2007/start 2008…could be that osx version was being dev’d on the dropped version so they had to re start the porting of the app to be able to create a intel mac osx capable package fully working with tyhe latest build of osx and where it [osx] tech wise is heading.

i believe at siggraph 2008 we’ll know alot more on where the osx version is.

Another one bites the dust.
My conspiracy theory that I presented so many posts ago is slowly coming to fruition. They’re just waiting us out until we all fold up our powerbooks, and all our mac pros are just collecting dust in the attic. Once every mac user has turned to the dark side of the pc, Pixo will be free to declare zero interest in a mac version, and stop any and all so called “development” for the mac. It’s all part of the plan.

So if I post on a Microsoft forum with feature requests for Windows 2010, they’ll start developing that version? Or I can finally get Baldur’s Gate 3 by posting feature requests? That’s great news!

All kidding aside, there are ALWAYS feature requests. People are welcome to write to support with feature requests any time they’d like. But that doesn’t change our production plans. All it does is add a new feature to the list of things for consideration when we start planning a new version. The only people who are talking ZBrush 4 at this point are a few users. Pixologic has never said anything about such a version.

As I’ve stated previously, we remain committed to releasing a stable Mac version that performs as well as – if not better than – the PC version. Apple has made huge changes to the Mac since ZBrush 2 was released, not the least of which was the change in processors. ZBrush 3 is even more tightly integrated with your system’s hardware than Z2 was, so there was a lot of work that needed to be done to create the Mac version.

One of the things that we’re being careful to do with this upgrade is to plan for the future in a way that will eliminate long delays for the release of future Mac versions. That takes time, but will be worth it in the long run.

Thank you. Finally, some real news. Not sure why it was so late in coming, but I can breathe a little easier now.

Aurick,
Thanks for the info, but…
I think the burning question here is… when?
We’ve all been waiting a long, long time.

Heheh - I suspect with the onslaught of iphones and ipods that macs will become increasingly common - and eventually all the big companies (even dare we say autodesk) will crumble.

But at the moment they’re a niche market and smaller teams are going to have a lot of problems allocating resources for them - and a lot of 3d packages focus more on direct x rather than open gl.

This explains XSI and zbrush to be honest - though given how large autodesk are I remain… suprised that 3dsmac doesn’t exist yet.

(oh - and thanks for the info aurick  )

Don’t do it man! Seriously… Do not give in!! As you can see by Aurick’s post, ZB3 for OSX is on the way!! In the meantime just get by with ZB3 under bootcamp and Fusion.
Us Mac users have pretty much always been in the minority. That’s not always easy, but it certainly does have it’s advantages too.
But look around you, there’s no denying that Macs and OSX are steadily gaining popularity world wide. Growing 3-4 times faster than the PC market.

Whenever I see a Windows/Linux only application that I’d like to purchase I always make sure I write a polite email to the developers. And while some are still refusing to budge (FeverSoft-Fry Render for example :frowning: ) I’ve noticed a lot less hesitance about porting to the Mac platform. All it takes is for enough potential users to show an interest and the developers at some point will recognize there’s a viable market there. (So start writing those emails my fellow Macintosh comrads  ).

Apple has pushed developers through some very rocky terrain over the past few years with all sorts of transitions. But in doing so they have positioned themselves very well for the next phase of computer evolution both in hardware and software. With Snow Leopard technologies like Grand Central, OpenCL, the awesome X-Code/Cocoa environment and further integration of ZFS, OSX is shaping up to be the perfect choice for 3D.

Even MicroSoft is finally starting to realize this.

It’s great to hear from you Aurick. I generally just scimm this thread hoping for a new post from you.

I’ll see what I can do about Baldur’s Gate 3.

i am just glad to hear there will still actually be a mac release. it wasn’t that hard for pix to drop a line and put poeple at ease was it? keep that communication flowing.

thanks

Aurick,

Thank you for weighing in and attempting to put fears to rest. As you have no doubt read countless times in this forum, most of the issues are centered on the lack of communication or even acknowledgment that we, the Mac Zbrush community have been left to wait around and wonder what is going on. For you to pop in every once and awhile and not even acknowledge these concerns feels like a slap in the face. I feel like we are being ignored. With all due respect it is this exact behavior that has many people really unhappy. I don’t know but suspect that what you are able to address is the result of some policy or decision, perhaps above your pay grade (without having a clue what your role in the company is) so perhaps you can take back the message to whomever is controlling the communication that the lack of communication is really what is frustrating and frankly bewildering to many of us.
Thanks,
Greg Faherty

I’m pretty happy with this. I see that there are already people weighing in, wanting more. Personally, though, I’m happy enough just to have heard from you.

Thanks. Good to know the Mac version is still somewhere in there, cookin’.

One day, it a future time when things smooth out and tensions ease, I hope you’ll treat us all to a fireside tale of the tribulations of the big port

Thanks! Some news is better that none. But did I miss something…it was bad news right. delayed… Well at least I still have bootcamp. I still wish it was native, sooner than later, but it will surely be worth the wait. :+1: :+1: :-1: :-1: :+1: :+1: :-1: :+1:

Got any pics :qu:

Truly, your words are a life-giving oasis to shield me from the blistering desert of my despair.

I just hope it doesn’t turn out to be a mirage. I’m really thirsty.
