Mac & Zbrush 3 Thread

Hey Aurick,
Any chance for a refund for PPC users?

wasn’t the upgrade FREE?
so err what ‘refund’ are ytou seeking from the free upgrade?

i totally get ppc users [i have a ppc g4 mac mini myself] will see the news of only intel mac update is coming in the free update to 3.5 later this year as somewhat disapointing but in reality we’re quite forunate in that zbrush doesn’t require expensive hardware [video cards etc like mudbox]
so updateing/adding to your hardware with an intel mac isn’t so bad as even the lowest mac mini should run zbrush for intel mac well with 2gig ram.:+1:

the FREE aspect of the update means there’s really no argument
for refunds i believe.

Buying zbrush 3 in advance was probably his/her first zbrush purchase. In that scenario, there wouldn’t be any upgrade yet. You can’t consider it a free upgrade from the temporary windows zb3 or mac zb2 license either, that wouldn’t be fair. When I purchased zb3 in advance, there was no indication what the system requirements would be. Luckily I had a Mac Pro. So I can see where first time buyers might be considered eligible for a refund.

Really, though, just get an intel and zbrush your butt off.

actually people bought zbrush 2.0…yeah i know i’m nit picking!

['note to self…must get a life!]

with a free update to version 3…quite a canny move…if it’s free your refund on something free would be £0.00 yeah? and to be fair version 3.0 came out last year…all be it on windows and windows capable macs with emulators/bootcamp and 3.1 later so getting 3.5 is something NEW

I see it differently. I bought 2.0 with a free upgrade to 2.5. Had I known that my platform was being dropped, I would have never made the purchase. But I have no choice now. Have to get a Mac Pro.

On the plus side, if you can swing a Mac Pro, it’ll be much better for every other app you use as well. They’re supported across the board now, where they used to have to use rosetta, and life is very good.

Your absolutely right James! My G5 is now almost 4 years old. Just hope Windows on top of bootcamp runs fast.

in a recent 3d world magazine pro workstation shootout the mac pro came out 1ST running bootcamp and xp pro for 3dsmax render tests…so yeah bootcamp will give you a great windows workstaion…actually the fastest workstation…mac or windows!

Mine works great under bootcamp as well. I like having Windows on my Mac, while many don’t. I consider it having two machines in one box. It’s nice knowing that you can have access to any software. Eventually, I’m going to put an entire new hard drive in just for the Windows OS apps, just to be greedy.

yep, i feel the same way about my windows partition. i don’t mind booting into bootcamp, although i wish the whole option key thing wasn’t necessary. it would be nice if you had the option to have the choice right off the bat when you turn your machine on. like someplace in preferences where you could toggle that on and off.

i know that sounds lazy, but sometimes, i hold option too late or at the wrong time and mac starts up.

zbrush runs like a champ in bootcamp. i can’t complain about anything.

Sounds promising and thank you all for the input, however I will have to purchase Vista. Hope Vista is friendly to Z!

I’m on xp pro, so I can’t vouch for vista, but I’m sure it’ll be fine.

@ industripop

you do have the option of bypassing the 'option' key boot mode if you partitioned your disk with bootcamp. in preferences there's the startup disk option... just select the windows disk. you have the same option from windows with the bootcamp helper in the taskbar.

i use rEFIT for startup, because i have OS X, Ubuntu Linux, and Windows all installed on one hard drive. you could, however, use it for just OS X and Windows.

@ all intel mac users

i think a lot of people are confused about bootcamp and think it will lessen their windows experience. bootcamp is simply a partitioning tool (to supply space on the hard disk for windows to operate) and a set of proprietary drivers from Apple for the hardware windows will need to communicate with. bootcamp is in no way an emulating solution. you’re not running on bootcamp–you’re running windows on your mac because of bootcamp. in fact, bootcamp’s partitioning tool isn’t even needed to get windows installed, it’s just a tool for convenience. you could (although Apple doesn’t support it), repartition your HD with two partitions and reinstall os x on one partition and windows on the other… no bootcamp, except for the supplied drivers.

Wow, I am an impulse buyer. I want my Pro plugged in and fired up tomorrow. My only hesitation is will I buy it tomorrow and find a week later Apple has the new line out that smokes todays line.

ZBrush is certainly Vista friendly. That’s what I’ve experienced, and it’s what Ryan Kingslien was using (Vista 64) in his video tutorials. If you can, get a 64-bit flavor of Vista, and as much ram as possible.

Yeah, that happened to me. I found a really good deal on a Mac Pro, and the day it arrived in the mail, the 8-core standard Mac Pros were released. While my purchase was still a steal, it was hard to even think about it, especially after I was given a 2008 Mac Pro to use at work. But it still holds its own for the work that needs to be done.

yeah with the speed of tech, that happens no matter when you buy! not positive but i think the next releases are October. iirc it will be mainly mac books and possibly the mini. google around and see what you find out. macrumors.com might have some info. anyway, the next few months after a release the old version keeps dropping in price while they try to get rid of inventory. what will be the “old” versions are still pretty good (as long as you don’t go bottom of the barrel)…

thanks smokebox. i know that i can have windows as my startup. my laziness goes beyond that! it’s a dumb lazy request, i know. the only reason i ever hit my windows partition anymore is to use zbrush.

Just got my mitts on an old G4, I know its not relevant to the ever increasing power of the Mac pro’s and even the iMac but I just wanted a machine to run all the old apps that arn’t supported on Leopard and such. My face lit up when I switched it on, copied some files from my real machine and watched syndicate start up, oh happy days lol and the best thing was it was free!

I’m a software/hardware junkie. I’m never satisfied with what I have. I bought one of the 8-core standard mac pros earlier this year. I even had it suped-up a bit, and yet, I’m still anxious about what’s coming out later this year. I just really hate being behind that dang curve! Watching all the great ZBrush 3 work around here is making me feel behind the curve even more. I just can’t get my hands on Z3 soon enough!

Man, I’ve got a quad core 1st gen mac pro and it’s more than enough! I’m sure that 8 cores is fast, but as fast as mine is, doubling the speed would only cut out a matter of seconds. The fact that they can hold 32 gigs is insane, but nothing I’ll need. Mine can hold 16 which is also retarded. So if you want to save some dough, the 1st gen is still adequate for any software you could ever run.

I’m sure the old apple is brewing up something fun though! Probably an intel mind reading 32 core 64 gig mac super pro that is beyond what any software will need for 10 years…
