Hi all
I have a question regarding resolution. I have a model with a lot of sub-tools and built a lot of these sub-tools as box models in Maya. When it comes time to detail them I sub-divide them up to level 6 but the resolution of surface noise, alphas and strokes is low and blocky or pixelated, indicating not enough resolution to support the detail. Bumping them up to level 7 doesn’t make much difference but it does drop the performance a lot, even when I only have the one sub-tool visible.
I have attempted to add more edge loops to the base mesh but with unsatisfactory results. My only option at this point is to export each sub-tool and work on it in it’s own file outside of the main project file. That way i can bump it up to level 8 or 9 to get a decent resolution and then use decimation master. Decimation master works pretty well but it leave my mesh without subd levels and full of triangles which is not the end of the world but eliminates the flexibility of being able to go back and adjust details on the same mesh without having to restart from a quad base model.
I hope that was clear.
Does anyone have any advice or suggestions on alternative ways to squeeze out more resolution from a mesh without having to do what I have mentioned above? Could I be missing a trick?
Appreciate any advice that can be thrown my way.
thanks
Harry
