Losing detail

Can someone tell me what operations cause smoothing, blurring and lost detail? I finally realized that using Goz to send the model to 3dsmax and back was causing a huge amount of detail loss when it comes back and gets zprojected do to the blur setting, but it seems other operations may cause this as well. I had a subtool that lost detail somewhere in the process of deleting some portions and merging it with another subtool. Any insight on what operations cause this and settings to avoid it would be appreciated.

I’m not sure but you might try turning off the “SMT” button in the subdivision section of the geometry pulldown. It used to cause me that general smoothing effect when processing other operations like changing the low res mesh. Hope that does it.
