looking to make dragon wings

Hi all.

i am relatively new to zbrush. I have been looking for a really good tutorial on making dragon wing membranes. I have searched for ones here. However, the ones i have found you need another program like Lightwave or Maya. I have neither. Is there a way to do it in Zbrush only?

thanks for any help.
and yes i did do a search here. some links were dead. others I wasn’t too impressed with. sorry.

Hi there!
I did a quick sketch yesterday (too bad I didn’t upload any picture of it) and added wings to a dragon I’m doing.
I didn’t like the ones it had and removed them.
In order to create the new ones:

  • I used dinamesh and a sinple cube. I started by getting a thin squared raw base. ZBrush has some nice tools to cut forms.
  • Then I created the wing profile by simple moving the mesh and Dynameshin’ it constantly until I had the main shape like this one.
  • Then I started to add volume to the “arm” part of the wing using clay and inflate brushes (The bone structures that holds the membranes).
  • After that, you end up with a flat Wing and with some more moving you can shape it.
  • Finally I used dynamesh to mesh insert it in my creature.

I’ll try to post some pictures of the process later today.

Hi, did you consider drawing the membranes in shadowbox, inside Zbrush?

That´s the way I´m doing Cthulhu´s wings / membranes. Standard sculpting for the bones and muscles of the wings. Shadowbox for drawing a thin and flat membrane, with the basic form (like a bat), holes and so on, and then adjusting it to the wing bones with the move brush and transpose.

Then, I start modeling on another subtool layer for the membranes, inflating veins, giving a soft fabric texture, etc. And another layer for the translucent polypaint.

I´m still working on it, so I cant show you an example yet (and this will be my first serious attempt in Zbrush)

Just a wip, (I don´t like the polypaint yet), but here you can see an example. Membranes drawn in shadowbox as a base form to work with.

Hope it helps you.

as above. I actual haven’t gotten too far into zbrush as yet.
I’m trying to to make the leap from sculpting in clay to working in zbrush. Its the old dog and new trick thing for me.

anyways thanks again and your Cthulhu looks great.

ill have to give it a try thanks
