LOOKING FOR ZBrush Consultant (Dallas, TX area preferred)

I have been working an issue with displacement mapping for almost 1.5 weeks now and on the forums with no good results. I would gladly either trade services or pay for someone to assist me directly with this file. It is involving 3ds max and ZBrush.

My problem is described in this thread: http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=40018 .

If you can assist me please let me know. I prefer someone that is in the Dallas, Texas area that is very knowledgable with both products, but will consider long distance phone consultation and electronic file transfer if necessary.

I often do proprietory work that would require a privacy statement being signed, but this project is a private one that I am on now.

If interested please send me a private message or email directly with estimated time needed to work through the issue and hourly or flat project rates. My email can be accessed through the forum. Payment can be arranged via cash, check or pay pal (pay pal is preferred).

I have worked with someone for an hour or so. They were able to get the proper type of displacement map from their computer using my ztool…I still have not figured out why mine is so messed up so still need assistance. If interested go to the thread listed above and view the different maps and if you know what would cause this let me know please or feel free to contact me as a consultant and I will pay for the answer. After over a week on this single issue I am desparate:( . I will post them as the last two entries on that thread listed.

Im sorry to hear it dosnt work for you, I certainly know these “heck, whats wrong?” situations in 3d.
Have you tried a fresh install? Could it be that you have a lot of scripts installed? Just an idea as it appears to be so hard to nail the issue, it might be worth it. If you already did so, sorry for the useless comment

EDIT: From what i have seen the displacement map IN displacement exporter looks just fine (from the small thumbnail in the screenie you posted). So it appears to be an issue happening after the creation of the map, while exporting, hmmmm. You do not open it with photoshop or anything (PS got some nasty autoadjustment routines that need to be off when dealing with 3d textures?).

I have been contemplating that … I think I will try that if I get no better answer before then lol…/ugg.

I noticed in your screen shot of the Displacement Exporter the quick code is:
DE-LBEK-EAEAEA-R32

whereas in post #28 you give it as:
DE-LBEL-EAEAEA-R32

Does this make any difference?

I think that is a typo, but I did play with the slider after the render so it may have changed. I will check.

I can check it in a bit after my renders stop. More nasty client work tieing up my processing power lol.

Is it possible you apply the displacment twice? once via a bump map in the alpha slot, once via displacement?

ZDisplace_Samson002_web.jpg

The one you see there is an example of too much contrast. That one did not work properly. The only one that I have gotten to work properly was made on another computer so I think I will reinstall ZB tomorrow morning and restart with the settings that worked for Popeyee.

I am not applying any other maps no.

Yes you do;) One can see that you got some settings turned on plus you got an alpha loaded thus …

Try that: Turn off everything under TOOL/DISPLACEMENT (Mode must be off, Intensity too) and try again. You shouldnt use these settings when dealing with MD2 which can be found under plugins (unless you want to add an additional bump).

If you’re trying to view your created map in PS, make sure you’ve turned OFF
Color Management Policies in the Color Settings panel first (Shift+Ctrl K)

If that works, I’ll bill you

Chris

Thanks for the tip, but I am always careful not to open a map like this in any program until being used in Max for fear of loosing depth or something.

So far it is down to a reinstall if removing all zscripts and plugs does not work.

Interesting comparison in export settings (mine work fine for Maya with the same code as yours) note the blue ringed:

good luck

Chris

Why don’t you use smooth or seamless? Does this produce a crisper map? I think I may need the seamless since, seams are showing up on my map. What’s the difference between R32 and D32? I’m using XSI btw.

Untitled-1.jpg womball, on 32 bit maps you usually got enough information to turn these two off.
And Hosh, i think i see whats wrong, You are using the TOOL/Displacement instead of Plugins/MultiDisplacment 2, but at the same time try to export your map as 32 bit WITH the MD2 exporter. You should never ever use tool/displacement to generate you displacment maps, its obsolete.
Use Plugins/MD2 only. Im pretty sure thats the case, as you usually cant see the 32 Bit alpha in Zbrush itself (ZB2 cant handle them, its as simple), but on your pic one can see that there is an alpha. At the same time one can see the Tool/displacment panel rolled out, which you really shouldnt touch (for the purpose your after).

It’s only very recently that I ever cared to try exporting a displacement map, so I haven’t payed much attention to it. There is a lot of good advice summed up in a nice compact thread here.

Thank you all, and good luck hosch.

I am not sure the difference. Once I get a basically correct map like the one Popeye made I will play with adjustments to get it better.

The only difference I see is the adjustment setting to 100 vice 0. I originallyl tried 100, but will try again. The only reason I listed my Tool>Displace settings is to show that the two computers were identical settings. I set mine to match his since his worked. I still got the same result.

I will try your advice. If no results I will remove all plugins, etc. and try again. If still not result I will likely try a reinstall.

I still do not know if XSI supports 32 bit displacement.
