Long Hair with Alpha Maps?

Hey,

so i’m trying to create my first more realistic like character and i am realy struggling with the hair.
My character has long hair with a ponytail, i’ve tryed fibermesh but it’s soooo hard so control, i also read
that it isn’t that good for loong hair.

So i searched for other solutions and saw that some people, i think it’s most used in the gaming industry,
just using plane surfaces with alpha maps later on?

I think the Renderings of the member “Dryn” showing this very good.

In my opion this is a very good result for hair.
Can someone tell me how this method is called? Or maybe someone saw a good tutorial in the web.
I can imagine that applying the hair textures later on, isn’t that easy…

He is using Maya, but the technique can be used in many other apps.
