Local Subdivision and Layers

Im working on a tree sculpt and needed more detail on the trunk than the branches. I used the techniques in Scott Spensers Book to subdivide the selected area. It seems to work fine and the detail is holding up. but Im unable to make new layers. Is there a reason layers are disabled when there is Local Subdivisions?

See the answer by Marcus in this thread: http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=66954

that did not answer my question. It just got way more confusing.

Simpler version: Partially subdividing a model changes the point count. Layers depend on the point count staying the same. So partial subdivision messes up your layers.

Partially subdividing a mesh that has active Layers will disable Layers altogether. The reason for this is that the Layer stays part of the model but you cannot return to it because of the changed vertex number.

If you want to partially subdivide a model make sure you delete any Layers first. If you want to keep the Layer’s sculpting delete with it switch on, otherwise switch off first. So long as you do that you will be able to create new Layers after partial subdivision.

If you have an earlier version of your model saved you may be able to carry out these steps on the earlier version. You could then append the later version as a subtool and use the Project All button to get back any lost detail.

HTH,

Thanks Marcus

what if i haven’t created any layers… but brought in an obj then localy subdivided before trying to create layers, but afterwords layers arn’t an option, just blacked out .

Thats the reel problem Im facing.

thanks again. for this sculpt im fine without using layers but would like to know for the future.

Providing you partially subdivide the imported OBJ before creating any Layers it shouldn’t be a problem. You simply create a New Layer.
