Little Mem Question

Hi, so i just upgraded my ram from 1gb to 2gb, the mesh im working on is 4.5 mil and the program is quite sluggish - with no other programs working. Can any1 give me some tips for improving performance. i have compact to 1250 or 1500.

Thanks

What are your other settings in the Preferences>Mem menu? And in the Performance menu?

How much free space is on the drive where ZBrush is installed? When was the drive last defragmented?

What are your other system specs? RAM lets you work with larger files, but if you have a slow CPU then your performance with those files will be sluggish. It’s the CPU that determines smoothness of interaction with your objects. You can improve things by hiding the parts of the mesh that you’re not currently working on.

Other settings -
Doc Undo 4
Tool Undo 5
Max Poly Per Mesh 6
HD preview max poly 4

Multidraw Multirender - on
Multithread steps 6
Qtransthreshhold .10
Background Proc 0
Multithread IO on

System -
Disk Free space - 175gb (2x250 hdd)
AMD 64 Dual 4400+ 2.21ghz
Hasnt been defraged in a while, i’l do one now.

Turning QuickAndDirtyEdit on will definitely help.

I also recommend dropping the Tool Undo setting back down to 4.

Beyond that, it would be a good idea to run a full virus scan and also run a spyware/adware remover. It’s possible that there are invisible processes running on your system that are eating up your performance without you even knowing it!

Its still very slow, particularly when 'undo’ing.
Defragged and virus/spyware scanned

Active points i’m working with is 3.8mil

Ok, when you upgraded your RAM did you replace your previous RAM or did you add on a new stick (or two)?

Either way, did you check to make sure that the RAM is approved for your motherboard? This can be verified at the mobo manufacturer’s website.

If you replaced the old RAM, did you go into the BIOS to set the RAM’s timing to match the new sticks? If not, then your RAM will be performing under the old RAM’s timing, which will create problems.

If you added a new stick to what you already have, did you make sure to get exactly the same brand and model number as what you already have in there? If not, then you’re likely to get problems due to variations between the two sticks. It’s sort of like trying to play in a band with two metronomes that are slightly out of synch.

I added 2 new sticks. so all 4 slots are filled.

The two new sticks are not the same brand, i couldnt find any by ‘buffalo’ in england. I think it would be impossible to find the exact same model for this memory. the manufacturers are Melco and Nanya.

They are all pc3200 400mhz 512mb

heres the motherboard

HWINFO stats
current memory clock - 157.9mhz
Timing 2.5-3-3-7

Just to add my pc has been crashing while in 3ds max lately.

You’ve just clinched it. Your problem is entirely due to the fact that the new RAM is incompatible with the old RAM.

When upgrading RAM, your choices are:

  1. Completely replace what you have.
  2. Exactly match what you have.
There’s no middle ground. I recommend getting rid of the two old sticks completely and buying another pair that’s the same as what you just purchased.

Until you resolve this issue you’re going to have all kinds of problems with all of your high end apps.

Thanks for the help
