Layer Breaking. Do layers have a distance limit/bounding box?

I am trying to make a layer where these tentacles grow out of this guys face. But when I turn of record, the tips of the long tentacles move in the opposite direction.

This verson is with the mesh goZ’ed from Max, but the same thing happens if I used SnakeHook to pull them out.

I even tried starting from the tentacled version, changing the base geometry back to the normal face, and morphing the layer to the saved tentacles.

Do layers have a relative distance limit or something? And if so, can I make it bigger?
