Lasso mask/selection tool automatically stops masking after a few seconds. Help!

Hey guys , I’ve a weird problem. Whenever I try to select or mask anything using lassoselect or masklasso , it will stop selecting / masking after a few seconds. I’m unable to get big selections unless I do a quick swipe , but its hard and annoying to get big precise selections. I’ve looked up on the internet and nowhere I found anyone having same issue. The cursor keeps on moving but the selection won’t continue
Things I’ve tried :
Symmetry on/off
new projects
loading all settings to defaults including brush / stroke
zbrush r46 and 4r7 in my system.
Reinstalling zbrush
I’m not sure if this used to happen in windows 7. I’m currently using windows 10 and my all my friends having different zbrush versions aren’t facing such issue.
Here’s a video about my problem

In case of bad quality try downloading the video first before watching.
Thanks in advance. !

Very strange.

First update to 4R7 P3

If you’re using a tablet, it looks like it could be something to do with tablet pressure settings.
Does the same thing happen with a mouse?

I’m on 4R7 P3 and it also does it. Mine will go further than the one in the video, but it will stop at one point. It will do it with a pen or mouse. This has been like this from at least 4R6 that I can remember. Personally, I’m not too worried about it because I’ll hide sections in stages if I have to.

This is actually a very old issue i asked about it like 7yrs ago, essentially there is a limit to how long masking/lassoing can go. I think at some point they extended it a bit but it still times out even though it isn’t working on a timer.

As has been said, there is a limit to a painting/sculpting/selection stroke but you should get more than your example. If you are using a tablet does the mouse give the same result?

One workaround would be to press Alt after making a small selection to hide that part (selection area will turn red), then use further strokes to isolate the part you want.

Do you have a Retina like screen? I mean very high screen resolution?
Can you try the same with ZBrush 4R7 P3 32-bit ?

Thanks a lot guys for your replies , you guys are awesome! I’m new to the forum and not sure how the multi quote thing works here.

Updating to p3 didn’t help. I’m using a wacom tablet but this also happens with a mouse . I will try reinstalling tablet drivers just in case.
Edit : Reinstalled tablet drives. With mouse I’m having same issue, but now with tablet I can get noticeably larger selection. It does stop at some point but its much better than how I get with mouse.

Yeah same for me . I also work by hiding sections when I need to . Although I tried 4r5 in someone else’s pc and it was working fine.
Edit: After reinstalling tablet drivers , its much better with pen tablet. The still isn’t working with mouse.

damn 7 years ! I personally think this might be some compatibility issue with specific hardware . Can you please share your pc specs along with operating system and tablet. That would be great!

Yes I’m using a tablet and the mouse also gives the same result. I will try without tablet drivers and let you know. And thanks for the tip !

No I have a single 24 inch monitor at its native resolution (1920*1080) . I ran zbrush 32 bit at lowest monitor resolution and also a relatively small document. Still happens :frowning:

Pc specs :
Processor : Intel i7 4790
Ram : 8 + 4 Gb (Corsair vengeance + hynet)
Gpu : Asus gtx 960 oc edition
Motherboard : Gigabyte H81M-S
Tablet : Wacom Intous pen and touch small

For what it’s worth…

On 4R7 P3 Mac 64bit:

Cannot duplicate the problem at all with a mouse. I can hold or draw the selection indefinitely. Works as expected, doesn’t stop drawing until releasing the mouse button. I tested this for well over a minute.

However with Wacom (Intuos Pro M), after 25 to 30 seconds the selection does stop responding (that’s a pretty long time - which is probly why I never noticed this problem before). I tested this several times, and it always stopped responding at around 25 seconds or so.
