Laptop or tower

Hi Folks,

I’m wandering for a while now what to buy. A good laptop or a good tower.

For my work I have to travel a lot so I have allready a laptop, on which Zbrush is running.
Its a 4Gig ram, 32bit xp with no Nvidia or ATI…just a standart Acer Laptop.
It runs fine, but I feel limited when I’m working high poly, 8 mil polies is a dream for me.

But a tower is NICEsss because you’re more free to modify the machine.

So both have advantages…so you probably see why I can’t choose very well.

Please help me out, and if you have some nice examples of laptops i should consider…feel free

it all depends on what you need/want. Is portability a need for you? if so, then your only option is a laptop/notebook. If that isn’t a need then you can do whichever works best for your situation. I personally will take a tower with dual 30" monitors any day over a laptop. More power, stability, upgrades are easy, etc.

my 2 cents.

thx goast, yes indeed mobility over power??? But if I read about the power of some laptops like the Alienware series than it make you doubt how much stronger a tower can be?

A tower will always win, it’s just a simple matter of space. While laptops can compete with a lower end tower now-a-days. The top of the line lap top is still weaker than the top of the line tower.

I have been working off of my most recent alienware laptop for about 2 years now, recently installed 2 more gigs of ram to it to help me out on zbrush, now I can reach around 5-10 mil poly’s. However this has been quickly surpassed by so many desktops, it’s great to carry this around with me but I definitely would prefer to have a desktop to work from and use this to tote it around with me. I would say stick with your acer and just get a desktop, use your acer as a secondary if you have to sort of thing.
