Kith Kanan WIP thread

Over a decade ago, I read the Dragonlance Chronicles for the first time while sitting on a ship floating in the middle of the Indian Ocean. A particular scene within the first novel always struck me as cool, and I’m finally getting around bringing the image that stuck in my head to life. For any of you that’ve also read it, this is eventually going to be a snap of Kith Kanan’s tomb.

Please feel free to bust me up as badly as you like. C&C is especially welcome, as I’m still somewhat new at this stuff. While I haven’t settled on a final compostion, I’m guessing that this will be a medium shot, so I’m probably going a little overboard on the details, but it’s fun. =)

Special preemptive thanks to Arran for the superb materials, fantastic reference, and above all massive inspiration. His 11 systems thread has been open in my browser for about a week now. =D

The clothing and throne are modeled and I’m about to start sculpting. Will post pics of those as they get further along. I only modeled as much of the skeleton as would be showing; probably a bit too much. Anyway…
Hope you like. =)

So I decided to model the legs with zspheres, mostly just to get some practice in with’em, and I think it’s pretty nifty how much control you can get just messing around with magnet spheres. I realize I probably could’ve sculpted the shapes out way faster, but it was fun practice. =)

So, the process I’m using to get the wrapping thing going… I’m lassoing off mask loops around the legs, and using the layer brush to pop them out. Then masking off bits between the loops, inverting it, and pushing it in some to get more layers. Not sure I like the way they’re looking (so far).

Thoughts on a better way to do this maybe?

Cool! This reminds me of my very first ZBrush project, The Gift Of The Wyrmslayer.

It depicted the scene where Tanis receives Wyrmslayer from Kith Kanan. It was my favorite part in the whole book.

Anyway this is starting out much better than mine did. Great modeling so far. I’m sure this will be an awesome piece! Keep us updated!

Just updating where the legs’re at for now. Still some work to do on the texture. Left is more complete. =)

Edit: Added another pic with the other leg more “done”.
Erm… anyone know any tricks to kill moire patterns? I seem to remember hearing that halftone dots kill it.

Prolly change some stuff on this. I think the dragons and unicorns sort of clash with one another, so I’ll probably change stuff around. I’m saving most of the drapery sculpting for when I actually pose him. I hope I don’t live to regret that. =P

Made some changes to the details of the robe. Settled on the whole “purity” symbol for the royal garb, and dragons on the throne itself. It’s sort of implied in the book, through a combination of explanations and the sketches that head the chapters. Either way, I like the change.

I’ve also got the basics of the throne done, but I was hoping for some tips on how to sculpt weathered slabs of rock. I’m finding it VERY easy to make it look overworked. <.<

Would it be enough to just throw a bump and texture on it? I’m thinking it may, because the whole scene will be dark, and you wouldn’t like see much of the detail anyway.

So… I sculpted to be part of a necklace he’ll wear, and polypainted for kicks. Took 3 or 4 hours starting from zSpheres to the “finished” polypaint.
Waaaaay overboard on details for something that’ll end up being so small, but I thought it might be nice to throw into my library.
